A lot has changed since 2021, we’ve seen the release of several new products to major product lines, which means it’s time to do a new drone review to reflect which drone advancements have since been added to make flying easier for new time pilots.

Since our last article DJI has been busy reimagining what’s possible. With a history of constant technological breakthroughs, 2022 was definitely no exception. Since mid 2021, DJI have released impressive new drones in the Mavic Series, Mini Series and FPV series. Let’s take a look at each new member to see how user friendly and supportive they are for beginners looking to purchase their first drone.

Mini SE

For completely new flyers, the Mini SE would be my very first recommendation. Despite being an older model, it sits at a lower price point compared to other models making it perfect for those wishing to get their foot in the drone world but not ready to invest in anything too advanced.

The Mini SE’s sub-250g weight makes it small, light and ideal for transportation while the compatibility with the DJI Fly app makes it super simple and straightforward to use. Due to the aircraft weighing under the Civil Aviation Safety Authority’s (CASA) threshold, registration is not required to fly recreationally. With most of DJI’s innovations still incorporated in this drone, such as Enhanced WiFi Transmission and obstacle avoidance technology and Return To Home features, first time users are supported with more than sufficient safety features to encourage confidence in flying.

Mini 3 Pro

The Mini 3 Pro, the newest member to the Mini Series has become known as the no.1 drone on the market; superior in quality, functionality and size. First to be seen in this series the mini 3 pro features a larger sensor that delivers breathtaking 4k HDR video as well as a rotating camera enabling vertical shooting mode for capturing vertical video without loss of resolution.

The pocket sized drone also incorporates all of the well loved safety features like Return to Home and APAS along with two sensors at the front, two sensors at the back and 2 sensors under the aircraft to optimise crash prevention. It also was the first drone to introduce ActiveTracking to a Mini Drone, making it a real stand out against the competition.

Mini 3

Recently released, the Mini 3 drone is also great for new learners. DJI Mini 3 slots right between the DJI Mini 2 and DJI Mini 3 Pro in the DJI Mini family. Mini 3 features improved flight and camera features compared to the DJI Mini 2.

Key differences between the Pro and new standard comes down to the feature it encompasses. The Mini 3 lacks some of the PRO features exclusive to the DJI Mini 3 Pro including tri-directional obstacle avoidance and FocusTrack but makes up with increased battery life and thus flying time.

The Mini 3 ends up sitting at a lower price point for those who prioritise budget over extensive features.

FPV Avata

Another great beginner friendly drone is the new Cinewhoop designed FPV Avata. How Hard Is Flying A Drone?

To determine the difficulty of flying we should look at how the control functions work. Most drone models operate through a remote controller that’s designed with two stick controls whereby the up/down and rotation functions are controlled by the left stick and the right stick controls direction of flight. For simply understanding the controls to fly, that’s about it. It’s overall quite straightforward and it only takes a bit of practice to really get the hang of how to operate.

While learning to fly might not be the biggest concern, it is important however, to remember to follow regulations within your area regarding operation of UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicle). Abide by CASA to ensure permissible operation and you’re sweet to go.
