Mavic 3 Pro vs Mavic 3 Pro Cine: What’s Different

Chances are, if you saw a Mavic 3 Pro and its Cine counterpart sitting side by side, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the two models. This is because outside of a small “Cine” marking on the drone’s arm, all of the differences between two models happens under the hood.

All the major specs that impact flight performance and creativity remain the same, including maximum flight, O3+ transmission range, omnidirectional obstacle avoidance and the rest of them. Anything the Mavic 3 Pro can do, the Mavic 3 Pro Cine can too! So instead of doing a side by side comparison, let’s take a look and explore what’s unique to the DJI Mavic 3 Pro Cine.

DJI Mavic 3 Pro Cine: Unique Features

Apple ProRes 422 Recording

The premiere feature of the DJI Mavic 3 Pro Cine is of course its support of the Apple ProRes 422 recording codec. A feature usually reserved for professional cinema solutions like the DJI Inspire 3, Apple ProRes on Mavic 3 Pro Cine can be used to capture detail-rich video that’s easier to edit when it comes time for post-production.

Which forms for ProRes are supported, you ask? The Mavic 3 Pro Cine supports three versions of Apple ProRes - ProRes 422, ProRes 422 LT and ProRes 422 HQ to match your filming needs.

The best part? ProRes recording is supported by all three of the Mavic 3 Pro Cine’s cameras, allowing you to capture in ultra-high quality regardless of the focal length you require. The drone’s primary Hasselblad camera supports ProRes recording in up to 5.1K/50fps or 4K/120fps whilst the two telephoto cameras support ProRes up to 4K/60fps.

Built-in 1TB SSD

Say no more to corrupted or lost SD cards! With support for high-quality, detail-dense Apple ProRes recording, the DJI Mavic 3 Pro Cine generates an incredible amount of data very quickly. That’s why the Mavic 3 Pro Cine comes with a built-in 1TB SSD, eliminating the need for external recording devices. This high-speed SSD supports the data-rich ProRes files captured by the Mavic 3 Pro Cine and with a capacity of 1TB, you can store shot after shot.

How do you transfer data you ask? With the included Lightspeed transfer cable that’s how!

While the Mavic 3 Pro Cine does include a built-in SSD, it does still support microSD cards just like other DJI camera drones. It’s important to note that when recording in Apple ProRes video formats, the Mavic will only record to the SSD due to the larger file sizes of ProRes clips.

Is the DJI Mavic 3 Pro Cine Worth It?

Yes… and no. Truthfully, the value of the DJI Mavic 3 Pro Cine is entirely dependent on your filmmaking needs. Not every filmmaker will fully utilise the data of ProRes recording formats however professional videographers and filmmakers who need as much video data as possible will definitely benefit from the Mavic 3 Pro Cine.

Additionally, the built-in 1TB SSD featured on the Mavic 3 Pro Cine allows videographers to capture more data than traditional SD cards before having to land and offload.

For most users, advanced Apple ProRes recording can be considered overkill and frankly not necessary when creating for YouTube or social media. The cost to upgrade from the standard Mavic 3 Pro to the Mavic 3 Pro Cine is likely better spent on additional accessories including extra batteries and filters as these will make a more noticeable impact on filming outcomes than ProRes recording.
