New Pilot Experience - 7th of November

Recap!

On Thursday night, 6-8PM, DJI store hosted their fifteenth New Pilot Experience across all stores. We had another solid turnout this week with plenty of first time drone owners and future drone owners.

The two hour course took pilots, with varying levels of experience, through some of the basics to the more intermediate skills. Some of the topics that were covered included pre/post flight checklists, photography/videography settings and CASA laws and regulations.

Furthermore, the workshop also had many questions asked and answered, boosting everyone's confidence when using the drone. We encourage people to ask as many questions as possible. Each week, we try and add those questions into the course to ensure that it is fresh and relevant! We highly recommend you to sign-up if you haven't already as it is definitely worth it! Click here to sign up!

Learning point — Use Cases Of a Landing Pad

One thing you may notice regarding the Mavic 2 Pro is that it sits relatively low to the ground. Depending where you are flying, this may not be an issue, however in most use-cases this is not ideal and definitely should be avoided. The reason behind this is at the bottom of the drone are some very important downward facing sensors. There are two optical sensors and one infrared sensor at the bottom. These sensors allow your drone to have precision landing and precise hovering in environments without GPS. Any scratches, dust and other particles will affect the accuracy of these sensors. A landing pad will help prevent damaging these sensors as well as other physical components such as the propellers and gimbal.

What the reasons for a landing pad?

  1. They can assist your drone in take off and landing with the color contrast and shape. The way the precision landing works is the drone remembers the terrain below it and if these is a landing pad (circle) among common gravel, it will remember the landing pad.
  2. Protection from water, mud and dust. These are three of the most common killers of drones.
  3. Depending on how tall the grass is, your propellers may be caught by the grass. It can ruin the lawn and ruin your blades, potentially your motors.
  4. Gimbal and sensor protection from scratches. Unfortunately I got a scratch across a bottom vision sensor when I was in New Zealand.
  5. Prevents upwards pressure on the gimbal from the grass.
  6. Avoids dust being blown, protecting you and the gimbal.
  7. Tells people around you that you are operating your aircraft and not to interfere with your flight.

Why might you not use a landing pad?

  1. If you cannot fit it in your travel bag, another option will be using a towel.
  2. You don't have one, you can purchase one here.
