DJI Certified Refurbished Drones: The Complete Guide
DJI Certified Refurbished is not a clearance bin. It is a pre-owned DJI product that has been through DJI’s own workshop — tested, repaired where needed, cleaned, reset, and packed again — then sold with the same manufacturer warranty as a new unit.
If you want the same camera and flight systems for less, and you can live with the chance of light cosmetic wear, refurbished is usually the smarter buy. At D1 it sits next to Ex-Demo, which is a different program. This guide covers both so you do not mix them up.
Quick take:
- Certified Refurbished is DJI-tested, fully functional, and covered by the standard DJI warranty. Care Refresh can be added.
- Savings are typically up to about 20% versus buying the same kit new.
- Light scratches are normal. DJI does not take returns for looks alone if the product works.
- Ex-Demo at D1 is not the same thing. Those units are serviced too, but warranty is 3 months and packaging can vary.
- Buy Australian stock from D1 if you want local support, in-store questions, and same-day Care Refresh binding.

Why refurbished is worth it
Typical saving versus a new DJI Certified unit — a working product, not a project drone.
Standard DJI manufacturer warranty. After-sales policy matches new, except swaps are refurbished-for-refurbished.
DJI Care Refresh can be added, so crashes and water are covered the same way as a new aircraft.
DJI’s own pitch is simple: substantial savings, tested by DJI technicians, the same functional quality as new, full warranty, and Care available on top. That matches what we sell as DJI Certified Refurbished at D1.
Refurbished vs Ex-Demo vs new
This is the bit most people get wrong. Both cheaper options can be excellent. They are not interchangeable.
| New | Certified Refurbished | D1 Ex-Demo | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who prepares it | Factory new | DJI certified refurb line | Serviced by DJI technicians |
| Function | New | Same testing standard as new | Fully operational |
| Cosmetics | New | May have light wear | Wear, tear, and labelling are common |
| Box and extras | Full retail kit | Repacked with manuals, parts, and a new box | Packaging varies; inclusions are listed on the product |
| Warranty | Full new-product warranty at D1 | Standard DJI warranty, same policy as new | 3 months Australian warranty |
| Care Refresh | Yes | Yes | Check the listing — do not assume it |
| If it is swapped | New for new | Refurbished for refurbished | Per the listing / D1 support |
Pick Certified Refurbished when you want the closest thing to new, with full warranty, and you are fine with a faint scratch. Pick Ex-Demo when the discount is bigger and a shorter warranty is an acceptable trade. Pick new when you want a pristine unit and the longest D1 warranty path.

How DJI refurbishes a drone
Not every returned unit is broken. Some come back unused, some for a fault. Before DJI sells it as Certified Refurbished, it goes through the same technical bar as a new product. Defective modules get replaced. Flight data is wiped. Firmware is current. The aircraft is deactivated so the next owner starts clean.
- Damage assessment. Inspect the unit and find what actually failed, if anything.
- Replacement. Swap damaged or defective parts, including shells and sensor modules. New parts get new serials so they can be traced.
- Functional testing. Gimbal, remote, battery, and the other non-flight systems get checked.
- Flight testing. Propulsion and video transmission are flown, not just bench-tested.
- Data processing. Latest firmware, flight logs erased, aircraft deactivated.
- Final checks. Visible parts cleaned or replaced. Final quality assurance before it can be sold.
- Packing and shipping. New accessories where required — manual, props, vibration dampers — in a new box.
That is why DJI can say the functional quality matches new. You are buying a rebuilt, retested aircraft, not a used listing from a classifieds site.
What to expect when it arrives
- A fully working product with documentation
- Possible light cosmetic wear — small scratches that do not affect flight or image
- A new box and the usual manuals / spare props for that model
- The option to add DJI Care Refresh
- If DJI ever exchanges it under after-sales, the replacement is another refurbished unit, not a new one
Returns for “it has a mark” are not part of the certified program when the aircraft performs. If something is actually wrong, after-sales follows the same policy as new.
FAQ
What is a DJI Certified Refurbished product?
A pre-owned DJI product that has been through DJI’s refurbishment line before sale. Only some returns were for a technical fault. Every unit still has to pass full function testing, cleaning, a new pack-out, and final QA against the same technical guidelines as new products.
Is the quality guaranteed?
Yes. DJI’s position is that refurbished units are tested to the same functional standard as new. Cosmetic wear can still be there.
Can I buy Care Refresh for a refurbished drone?
Yes. At D1, Certified Refurbished listings are eligible for Care Refresh. Bind it the same way as a new aircraft — and if you are in store, we can do that the same day. Read the Care Refresh guide.
What after-sales do I get?
The same after-sales policy as new, with one hard rule: refurbished is exchanged for refurbished. You do not get upgraded to a new boxed unit through that path.
How is this different from D1 Ex-Demo?
Ex-Demo is also serviced by DJI technicians and sold cheaper, but it is not the Certified Refurbished program. Warranty is 3 months, accessories can vary, and the unit is not a 1:1 stand-in for a new retail kit. Read the product page before you assume Care Refresh or a full accessory set is included.
Should I buy refurbished or wait for Ex-Demo?
If you want full warranty and a predictable kit, refurbished. If you want the lowest price and can accept a shorter warranty plus mixed packaging, Ex-Demo. If you want it mint, buy new.
Final thoughts
Certified Refurbished is the clean way to save money on a DJI drone without gambling on a private second-hand listing. DJI has already done the teardown, the flight test, and the QA. You add Care Refresh if the aircraft is going to leave the house — which it will.
At D1 you also get Australian stock, a specialist if you want to see the unit, and the same Care Refresh bind we do on new drones. Ex-Demo stays on the table when the price gap is worth the shorter warranty.
